I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like a very fun way to live. ![]() This is a scientific term for a physiological part of our brain that tries to protect us by telling everything around us is a possible threat, therefore we question everything and move about our in our lives always expecting the worst. Unfortunately, like Gollum, our own reptilian brain gets in the way. We all want to be happy and fulfilled in our own way, these basic desired feeling states being the same regardless of who we are or what we believe. I tend to believe that we all have a Gollum voice inside of our heads that threatens our well being every single day.Īll of us want a good life. Not only is this completely depressing, it is also a very cautionary tale. He is cast out of his village, sent out into the world utterly alone and slowly becomes Gollum–named for the retching noise his body makes as he physically grapples with the distrustful, evil-minded person he’s become. From this moment, Smeagol’s life changes forever. Before we know it, Deagol is lying dead on the lake’s shore with Smeagol’s hands around his throat. Deagol is the one to find it, but immediately upon seeing it Smeagol is taken over by its ominous presence and demands it be given to him. They soon happen to discover the One Ring buried in the sand beneath the water. There he is, a happy young hobbit-like creature on his birthday, lazily fishing with his best friend Deagol. The story of Gollum is definitely a sad one. ![]() You may not be living in a cave with bulging eyes, a loin cloth and a split personality (I sure hope not!), but you are more like Gollum than you know…! ![]() Such a pathetic little creature he was–so full of hate, yet deep down, there was still the Smeagol part of him trying to make its way through.
